The project

We are a group of  seven students from Germany, The Netherlands, Scotland and Sweden. We have all participated in the Erasmus+ project. This project is to help strengthen the link between school and work and learn about the international opportunities  for studies and work. During our visit to Scotland we visited Catapult Engineering, and from this we made this website and a brochure.

Our group was Diederik Schretlen, Hope Gardner, Jesper Klein, Juliette Kerkhof, Melina Wilke, Ophelia Haas and Sammi Bowers.

Our visit at Catapult

On the 23rd of January we, a group of Erasmus+ students went to the ORE Catapult offices in Glasgow. After a short amount of free time in the city we began our visit at 2pm. When we were greeted our first impressions were of very friendly and welcoming staff.

We were led into a meeting room filled with what seemed to be high-tech equipment. The day kicked off with a visit from the CEO – Andrew Jamieson – he, himself went on a company visit which inspired him to pursue a career in engineering which is one of the reasons why the company was so accommodating to our visit. He said, “we hope to inspire one of you”.

After the CEO left, 2 engineers – Waqas and Connail - led us in a presentation about what Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) is and about what the company does for this industry sector. They were very accommodating to our questions and gave us interesting answers that were easy to understand.

They then took us on a tour of the office. We were taken aback by the open planned and modern offices that we could see ourselves working in one day. As we passed through the offices our guides took us through the offices they had arranged for experts in different fields to explain what they do as part of Catapult. These speakers were from their research, strategy and design engineering departments.

Finally, we were taken back to the meeting room and given a task to create our own wind farm. It had to optimise the space we were given, whilst having a high power output whilst still taking into account other factors. We then had to present our choices to Waqas and Connail as though they were investors. This exercise opened our eyes to the amount of planning that goes into building a wind farm in a fun way.

Overall, we all were sad for the visit to come to an end and we wish that we had some more time at Catapult. Ultimately, the experience was fun and interesting way to learn about the world of ORE. We are incredibly thankful for all the effort that Catapult put into our visit.

Erasmus+

Jesper Klein

I'm a Swedish student and I'm planning on studying engineering or working abroad for a gap year. I'm currently a part of the Erasmus+ project. I'm in my last year of secondary school where I'm studying natural science.

Sammi Bowers

I'm a Scottish student and I'm planning on studying physics at university next year. This is my last year of secondary school where I study advanced physics, maths and chemistry. This is my second year in the Erasmus+ project.

Melena Wilke

I'm a German student and I'm 17 years old. After finishing school I will probably study logistics. At the moment I mainly study physics and history in my final year in school.

Diederik Schretlen

I am a Dutch student and I'm 16 years old. I'm in my second to last year of secondary school. I like physics and mathematics and after secondary school I want to study something with engineering.

Ophelia Haas

I'm a student from Sweden and the secondary-school Sandagymnasiet, where I am in the second year.

I'm interested in languages and  other countries and that's why I joined Erasmus+. In the future I want to work with something connected to natural science or medicines.

Juliette Kerkhof

I'm  16 year old, Dutch student and I'm in my second to last year of secondary school. I mainly study mathematics and economics. I'm very interested in working/studying abroad and that is the main reason why I joined Erasmus+.

Hope Gardner

I am a Scottish student currently attending Trinity Academy in Edinburgh. I am 17 years old and in my last year of school. I study Modern studies, Geography and Spanish and I am part of the Erasmus+ project. I hope to study politics and geography at university in Glasgow in order to pursue a career in geostrategy.
